I know the boat I want but I don\'t know if it has a name

Based in the Med, I'm planning to give up sailing due to an injury, and to buy a motor boat (in UK and trail it over). If I wanted an 18-20 footer, semi displacement, large cockpit but capable of sleeping 2 on occassion with a separe heads + small galley, inboard or outboard; budget £15 to 18k what should I look for? Channel 22, Hardy ? Pointers appreciated.

CI 22, excellent boat, had one for years. Or newer how about a Seaward 23? Personally I wouldn't touch a Hardy with a barge pole. There's also a little known boat which would also suit, a Duver 23. Or maybe a Seaworker 22.

IMHO it's a sheep in wolfs clothing. The bigger ones do look the business but I've heard various reports which means I wouldn't want one. The smaller ones seem too much of a compromise, they just didn't quite get it right, it was neither a proper planing boat or a SD. Just not my cup of tea.

Your budget is tight for an inboard powered boat but have a look for new or used boats from these builders

Seaward
Trusty

For the last two years we have had great fun with our Orkney Orkadian 20, trailing frequently to West Wales, the Bristol Channel, South Devon and South Cornwall. Including a twin axle multi-roller trailer the towed weight is about 1.8 tons which pulls well behind a 3 litre Subaru Outback. All boats are compromises, especially regularly trailed ones. Think really carefully about weight, accomodation, ease of launching and recovery, likely use etc.

This is my first attempt at posting photos:

spill the beans on these reports? as the RNLI have just bought two and Raymarine have one. surely both these organisations would check well before purchase?

LJ has it right.
The little Hardy is a great boat but does like either planing or pootling.
The CI 22 can handle either.
Will punch through tough seas when other stuff will give up.
Doesn't like it up the chuff though but will cope.
Can't praise the little beggars enough

Sealine 215, 7M LOA, trailable, loads of room on board for her size (sleeps 4 easily) sits 5 in the cockpit and still quite a pretty boat, well made and will hold her value.
Mine, Misty Spirit, /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif is for sale: www.bristolyachtbrokerage.com

For what it's worth I think that the Orkney 20 is the one to have and is a wonderful boat in all seas.

Have you considered the french Peche Promenade types of which there are many in the 19-22ft range ? Expect there are lots down in the Med.

The class act in the earlier suggestions is the Seaward 23 but I don't think you'd find many/any in your price range.
