So after 29 years service as a Corvette 32, this week Boadicea extended herself to 34', or at least that's what the boatyard's tape measure says.

Effectively I am now paying £21 per month for a section of 25mm bow rail.

I wonder if it would be worthwhile cutting the rail and fitting some hinge sections so I could swing the rail back when on her berth,

Now, about the complete lack of parking at the yard due to other new commercial ventures starting ...

Step one, make sure the boatyard's tape measure uses the same units as everyone else.
Step two, get the hacksaw out, but only if the yard agrees that will bring your measurement - and payment - back to what it should be.
If the yard doesn't agree, it's time to start looking for a new berth with more reasonable people. Actually, given the parking issue, maybe this should be step one
 
Terms and conditions do mention you will be charged for overhangs but never yet come across anywhere that charges for the overhangs. That just sounds like money grabbing.
I was in quay lane paying for the length of my boat hull yet had a 44ft mast laying on the boat which was no problem .
 
People get annoyed when their overhangs get destroyed by someone else's overhangs trying to occupy the same space, regardless of whether one, none or both are paying for the space.

Sometimes it would be nice if someone chopped off all the bits that hang over the main pontoon, like pulpits and anchors.....
A lot of people are maybe taking the mick at both ends, with davits and stuff, maybe that's tipped the marina into taking a firm line?

When it comes to the bill, we all just want to know where we stand, what the bottom line will be?
Why should I pay more than a boat which takes up more quayside with its davits and bowsprit?
But I want to know what it will cost, then I can decide whether to stay.
 
It is a problem for yachts measuring 40' that have 5' bowsprits. To try to save money they moor stern in - but then the bowsprit protrudes and at night cannot easily be seen. Mooring bow in is simply more selfish, likely to cause more of an issue - and is so easily noticed.

Harbours/marinas have a problem, with which I am sympathetic.

A few inches here or there should not be a problem but they have to draw a line, hull length (with no protrusions) seems fair.

The answer for the 5' bowsprit is to have the bobstay replaced with dyneema on a tackle system with dedicated clutch and simply fold the sprit up. Then everyone should be happy. If the sprit does not have a hinge, either pay up or invest in the hinge. We have a hinge

Interestingly we are registered as 35', are actually 38' and have a 5' prodder.

Our davits, and dinghy on the davits, sit inside the line between the 2 transoms from where the 35' or 38' (were it to be measured). We don't visit marinas much - and have never been measured. We Aussies are renowned for our honesty and integrity :).

Our marinas are generally few and far between - if we need to resort to one - we pay what is asked, no ability to shop around (excepting in the cities like Sydney etc).

I know of several boats with modified pulpits to take almost a foot off their overall length. Often for mooring restrictions - ie mooring for up to xx feet only rather than marina or boatyards.

It is not unreasonable and its pretty common. Biggest problem is the space between each lane which is predicated on the length of the boats each side to leave a minimum clear between. If a boat has davits/bowsprits etc then that impinges on the space available for others so not unreasonable to charge for the total space occupied rather than just the hull length (which in itself will have overhangs so exceeds the water space it occupies. similarly increasingly wide boats have reduced the number of boats for a given length of pontoon as the space between each finger has increased.

Our club marina charges by area (total length*maximum beam) which benefits older narrow boats, but is fair in relation to the space a boat occupies. My neighbour has modified his anchor platform to fold up to keep the overall length (including his barn door rudder!) under 10m.
 
May I add a complaint about boatyards measuring to the next whole metre. Some do it in 1/2 metres, and some still use the good old 'per foot', but most seem to use whole metres. This means those of us whose boats are just over 8m get charged the same as a boat 2 1/2 feet longer.

I am thinking of adding a non-functional bowsprit, just to get my money's worth! :)
 
We added a 6' folding bowsprit, though no one has yet asked us to demonstrate its functionality, transient or otherwise.

In the Baltic I noted that marina charges went by size category: 6-9m, 9-12m, etc. i.e. in 3m increments.

In one local marina they were measuring the difference on outboard runabouts as to whether the engine was up or down. I thought that was just a bit desperate.
 
Marinas here in Turkey charge by the square metre so it's loa x max beam. They include the bowsprit or anchor roller in the length measurement but as far as I'm aware they do not include the extra length of o/b motors which can be considerable when tilted out of the water. Seems strange.
 
Same problem with mine, tender overhangs bathing platform by about 2’ and anchor adds another foot. I do see the point as you can’t put another boat in that space occupied.
Our new paddle board hire which does not benefit us at all but uses 3 car parking spaces plus all their customers, if you are not parked on the Friday morning for the weekend, there is nowhere to park. Could always come by boat

They should include the anchor on the roller. One of the most antisocial things I know is an anchor on its roller overhanging the walkway, frequently at a height to take your ear off at night. I'll never run a marina, but I think it'd be an extra tenner a night if your anchor - or any part of your boat, for that matter- overhangs the walkway.

Would you charge for passerelles and planks suspended at varying heights above the pontoon as well?
