I know I\'m not a yottie but...

...did you see Ellen McArtur on BBC1 last night. I have to say that not only are her achievements bloody remarkable, but that Tri-Maran was just an incredible and beautiful piece of kit. I'd like to see a MoBo of equivalent size (or bigger) ploughing its way so elegantly at 22kts through 40ft seas. Just awesome!!..and single-handed!!

People like her make valliant efforts when it comes to putting the (sadly missing) great back in Great Britain.

Here's to Ellen McArthur, from a deeply impressed motor-boater!!

I for one would agree with your point about seeing a boat ploughing through waves at 20+ knots but only providing it had 2 x hoofing great diesels in it!!
Yes she does a great job sailing that big old beast and hats off to her but sailing isn`t for me.

Come on!
Imagine yourself single handed on a large craft achieving over 20 knots without using your engines.
I could not fail to be impressed with both the skill of the skipper and the design team that conceived and built her.
Does it not make you just a little interested in having a go?

All is not what it seems!!

At a guess I would imagine it's all electronically controlled with electric winches and stuff. Probably some old sea dog sitting here in Blitty doing it all by remote control.
Helen (Ellen) is just the face for the advertising./forums/images/icons/wink.gif

If you saw the programme then you would know that most of the hard work is manual. I don't think a pretty face for marketing would have managed all those sail changes.

I one helped crew a 75ft Global Challenge racer back from Plymouth to O.Village in a S.W force 8. Most of the trip was overnight and was pitch black. The only thing you could see was the red glow of the digital compass and the breaking white foam of the huge waves pushing and lifting the boat from behind. 3000mls from the nearest land on your own in the Southern Ocean !!! She certainly commands my RESPECT. Dave.

Your post has to be treated with the contempt it deserves.

Ellen has earned real respect for fulfilling her dreams from those who watch in awe

If she had been a man would she have received this type of comment.... I don't think so.....?

Do you believe everything you read??

Grow up. No, lighten up!!

I'm glad you have viewed it with contempt because it is nothing less than I expected. I was being flippant /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Although...... she is on a multi million £ yacht with probably tens of shore based weather forecasters and strategic helpers at her disposal. And she gets well paid for it........

Where as others do things a little more basic (<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.stingo.co.uk/> See HERE </A>)/forums/images/icons/cool.gifThis is where my admiration lies...../forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Hi Dom - I don't get SB&R anymore, not because I don't like it, but just because I don't have the time these days to properly read MBM and SB&R. Shame - but one of 'em had to go...

I would like to know what Priddy is up to though??

All this fuss about a woman who once came second in a yacht race. If it was a bloke, we'd never have heard of him. Give her credit though, she's very clever at cranking up her own hype

Never! good sir!

I thoroughly enjoyed pushing the sticks forward today on a flat calm sea and hearing the increasing dull roar of two V6's shoving my boat up onto the plane. I've heard it and done it many times before and I never tire of it.
