I have rationalized my boating

That sounds so sad,for some reason yachting is still considered a rich ans pastime, maybe you can form a group and share a boat, not always possible as ownership is an intrinsic part

Have been in boat partnerships before, they seem to work for a while then you find that all the work seems to be done by only some of the partners whilst others find reasons that they can’t help this weekend then next weekend.
I would consider a dinghy (I started sailing with a Mirror) but I feel I’m no longer agile enough, (76 and getting older), and the last thing I want is a ‘mobo’ boring!
So it is potentially back to crewing and OOD.

I feel for you. Could a swinging mooring in the haven be a way forward.? I am on my way to selling up, but would like to help.

Thanks for the kind thought, You have only just moved down to the haven so I thought you were settled there. You had your boat in East Llanion transported by Lea.

I have often thought of the haven, and I had a swinging mooring for over 20 years so not a problem, but travel to and from (120 mile round trip) would soon equal the cost of keeping her in Aberaeron harbour only 1 mile down the road.
But maybe the haven is still an option.

Regrettably the latest increase in mooring fees from our local council is seriously indicating that my pension just won’t cover these new charges and it looks as if I have to give up the boat after 50 years of sailing. We have been subject to above inflation mooring fees for the last eight years, but this years 33% increase is way above what I can justify from the household budget, so this season looks like my last, and my beloved Sadler 25 will have to go.
The local councillors seem to think that all boat owners are rolling in dosh and they own the ignorantly assumed ‘Gin Palaces’.
Out of a population of some 60 boats in our harbour only two are under 10 years old, and no-one in their right minds would choose Aberaeron for their ‘Gin Palace’, particularly with a record of about 40 boats sinking on their moorings over the last 10 years, with the record loss standing at 9 boats in one day.
I should add that I’m not the only owner seriously considering selling up.
So much for encouraging sports.
Send a letter to the head of your local council asking them to explain the basis for the increase and expressing concern that it is unreasonable given the reality of a normal person's life. I'm sure they are not increasing the council tax bill by 33% for houses with gardens because they are an indulgence....

That said, perhaps there is a real and meaningful basis for the increase. I suspect it is financial shenanigans.

Good luck.

No, Fairey Atalanta..
Years after I sold the mashford I found it quite by chance on internet for sale in Gibralter,I recognised it by the steam bent timbers I had replaced ,it then appeared for sale again in Malaga sans Stuart Turner with an awful outboard strapped on the stern, someone had spent lots of money on a complete makeover but the outboard was so ugly

We have in fact formed a small group ( backed by the majority of harbour users) in an attempt to fight the council on this, last Tuesday we had a meeting at the Yacht club attended by harbour users from New Quay, Aberaeron and Aberystwyth, BBC news Wales were there so hopefully we can start to generate publicity over this high handed attitude of Ceredigion Council.

To be truthful my biggest ownership worry will be the engine,My wife’s cousin is a clever chap and resonable fit so probably finding a reliable motor mechanic will be high on the list although Maybe it might be like my Stuart Turner years ago that ran like a singer machine without a worry🙄
Easy then. What's holding you back?

The standard plan is straightforward as in
  1. Make a requirements list, sorted by need- and nice- to have
  2. Decide investment budget
  3. Decide operations budget
  4. Research berthing options
  5. Find boats on offfer -> collect data > analyse to make comparable > evaluate against requirements.
  6. Remove rose tinted glasses to separate dreaming from reality
  7. Look again
  8. Act
If really desperate, invite foum members to help out. Stock food and wine and prepare yourself for an unforgettable experience.

Engines , pah
Outboards-brand shiny new outboards - are perfect for Ria sailing and no propellor to get barnacles.

Excuses

What’s next ?’ It’s the wrong weather for boat buying’ .. 😎
(I once motored 30 hours straight on a 5hp Mariner 2str . It was a lot quieter than an inboard and less smelly)

Get-on-with-it
You are not a hill farmer but a coastal cafe sojourner @heart, imho! 😉

I like the mix of ownership, maintainence and sailing. Always do thing to do regardless of the weather or time of year. Slightly concerned about how little I have on the to-do list with my first plastic refit compared to my old wooden. We shall see…
Don’t worry. After 13 years of owning this plastic boat I have completed hundreds of tasks and still have a list just as long as when I started.

I am delighted to hear that :)
It’s diffeeent things. I remember caulking. repairing canvas decks and ribs, preparing and varnishing and refurbishing Blake’s loos.

On this plastic one it’s the endless maintenance and improvement of plumbing and wiring of all the home comforts, plus all the ropes and blocks chafing eventually. But mostly electrics.
