National Lottery because there is an Oyster 49 moored opposite Cornish Maid which is for sale and I am sure it really has my name on it.

But reading various threads and articles in the mags, it seems I should lust (HWMBO's word) after a catamaran instead. Even James J has one now, so it must be so.

If this is true, which one should I long for?

Or what boat would you recommend for me (and him), bearing in mind that a lottery win would be needed to fund it?

Well, a girl can dream, can't she?

Depends exactly what you are after. Best to go and have a look at a few!

I quite like the layout of some of the Fontaine Pajot boats, but dont like the build quality. The Broad Blue 435 takes some beating.
The Manta 42 is quite nice, as is the Maxim 38 (ask Stingo)

You must have heard HWMBO snoring then.

Had a look at a few web sites today, some lovely catamarans about, aren't there?

Best of luck, Becky...

Seem to remember reading somewhere that you've normally got a better chance if you go for a random "Lucky Dip" number selection rather than choosing your own. Any thoughts?

PS Cats aren't real boats! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You could do a lot worse than look at the 'Outremer' range. The 45' is fast, tough, civilised and easily handled by two. There's a good one in Plymouth.

You could look at a Dean - if you really must have leopard-skin upholstery ( now, there's a thought! ) and hip baths.

Or you could look at a Prout - if you hanker after a 'committee boat'.

Statistically no difference on chance of winning. However higher probability of winning a larger amount if you win if you use randomly generated numbers as it more likely to take you out the "birthday zone".

Gunboat 48 is not a cruising boat - any cruising cat owner looking at the image below would immediately cross this boat out of the consideration:

Yes I am sure it is great fun for a few hours (rather like a big hobie) but it would need far too much attention on a long voyage, and would scare me short handed in a big blow

Realistically, the only sort of Oyster you're going to buy with a £10 lottery win is going to be from Sainsbury's. Mind you, you should be able to get a cute little tabby kitten from the PDSA for a tenner. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I'd go for the cat, it won't give you salmonella.

Re: Best of luck, Becky...

Hypothetically, of course, and money of limited object, would you rather have an Oyster 56 (just small enough to sail without a paid crew, and big enough to accommodate a permanent paid crew, according to their brochure) or one of the larger cats, at equivalent cost? Cost is around £1000000. Even the Oyster 49 is priced at around £450000 (2003 model, Ellen May, see the Oyster brokerage)

For long-distance cruising, or racing in the Caribbean. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
