I have a little pinnace...

... which is currently out of the water having the paint stripped off. The original hull is teak and I've replanked the (extended) topsides with larch.

What would the panel suggest for priming the bare wood?

My current thoughts are to do the whole lot in red lead whereas a professional has suggested Vinyguard which is a lot cheaper. I also like Bradite Primer but don't like their topcoats.

I haven't decided on what topcoats to put on but have until now been thinking about Dulux Weathershield.

Any thoughts?

Metalic pink wood primer, excellent stuff or go with the red lead, does for many a wooden boat!!
Dulux exterior gloss (weathershield) will do very nicely, thankyou!

Thanks Colin. Is the metalic pink stuff Bradite or are you thinking of something else? My neighbour used it and it went on wonderfully.

Dulux weather shield is **** ! I made 50 windows for a customer that had brown stains seeping through the top coat after he used it on softwood .

Besides, the eurotwats are making it illegal so it must be good stuff.

3 Coats Aluminium wood primer, any make
2 to 4 coats undercoat, any make
2 coats gloss, any make.
Job done.

Witham oil and paint Co. do a lovely ali primer.

Weathershield is a three part system for the best results which include longevity.

That said, I use a good primer and the Dulux Weathershield undercoat which gives great results. I also add a little Owatrol to the top coat to help it flow, the reason for that is I'm nearly always painting in less than perfect conditions.

Red lead paint as a primer is IMHO, not suitable as it can (as Cuchilo pointed out) leach through to the top coat.

My hull was painted last 5 years ago and could if need be last another year, I will probably however give her a freshen up this winter.

Dulux will not give you the very high gloss finish that the two part paints will, but it will last a lot longer and sholud if care is taken with the application be almost as good to look at.

Actually it was the lack of primer and the use of the dulux part one preservation primer that i think caused the problems .

Dunno the maker, but its shiny like mettallic and pinkish, brilliant stuff we've used it for years, I'll see if Warren has a tin around and get the name. (I dont have any) Just used to ask for "metallic pink wood primer".

I prefer the aluminium primers, but thats personal, be careful with the Owatrol only use a little with the top coat.
