Who is a die hard sailor, and gets very very grumpy if he has to use his engine for any length of time, Is this the same for you or is he just unique in his attitude, not that I am saying any one on here is not unique in their own way but may be not in the same way...........b******k [sorry Kim] you know what I mean!!!!! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Well not exactly grumpy, or even grumpier than normal.

Just resent paying for fuel when wind is for free comes from being a card carrying Yorkshireman.

most sailors take their boat out to enjoy the peace and quiet of floating on the waves, and the spirited chuckle of the wake is a soothing lullaby. The noise of the engine is very intrusive into this peace and quiet, (as is the deep throbbing roar of that mobo passing rather close/forums/images/icons/smile.gif)

This somnulent state sometimes becomes so deep that it requires the boat to be attached to the bottom to allow the proper use of the cushions - Normally interupted by some wally on a PWC.

Nicely put! Engine is a nice item to bring us even faster out of the noice, into the nice and quite parts......

Another issue... is it just me thinking this, or are the number of posts by Powerskipper increasing on the Scuttlebutt. She even talks like a sailor! Perharps pondering about crossing from the dark side.....?

In answer to your original question (sorry to drag you back to the original topic!). We both get grumpy as hell if the engine gets switched on, even the new quieter fast one.

Its usually because we have to get back home by a set time, which both of us feel is deffo NOT what sailing is about. There's not alot better than just going as fast as God will let you! It's all very well tearing around with your "transom on fire", but we enjoy a good float from time to time.

Well.. nothing is impossible, although at 35kts the aim is high. Still, I know someone with this little machine, a true sailing-beast let's rave .

On the other hand, to go over 10kts without the needs of an engine is a very special feeling.........

Have you had over 10 knots in your Dufour 32? If so, how big were the waves?/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Must admit, when you have slung your hook and are all secure, I take great delight in turning the engines off. There is nothing nicer than being at a quite anchorage, I think that is why Newtown creek is so popular.

No, not with our brand new Dufour... yet! Managed to do it once with our former Jenny 28.1 on a beam reach with a very large kite. Whole boat was fibrating and was just for a short moment. Used to sail a catamaran (Hydra 16) and 10kts weren't much of a problem.

Max sog for the Dufour is 8kts at the moment....

16.7 kts is our confirmed record (both of us witnessed the log which averages over 10 secs) but we both think it was reading 19kts as we started the surf as seen by peripheral vision, the bulging eyes were focused hard on the bow wave and keeping straight!! I think SWMBO said 'Sheeeeeet' but I can't for the life of me think why she thought it should need adjusting.... 50% genoa, no main East F6/7 and a breaking wave on Poole Bar at low water.

That seems to be the required combination, a strong tailwind and one mean wave on the shallow patch! I was a bit concerned at what the depth might be at the bottom of the hole, we had registered about 16ft only just before...

We all have to remember that we SAIL our boats and are not concerned how fast we go, are we??? /forums/images/icons/wink.gif If we wanted to go fast we'd have bought motor boats. now lets all stop being so childish and stop comparing how fast we've been. ( only 10.6kn/forums/images/icons/frown.gif). I'm still not put off the idea of a multihull in the future.

Did recently come back cross channel and managed to sail all the way at a sready 7.5kn- bliss.

Had a building sea on the quarter, but that only made our speed increase to 8.5kn down the front. It just reminded me how few days we get when it is possible to sail at a nice speed in a straight line towards your destination.
