I took the Wayfarer up to Annandale sailing club the other night and decided to go for our first wee sail of the season. When I hauled up the new genoa - one season old - there was a wee hole about the size of an old crown coin at the top of the sail. I then realised that there was also one in the sail bag and a bit chewed out of the starboard sheet. A moose indeed. It had climbed into a wooden trailer and feasted on my genoa.

What intrigues me is the fact that in the garage we keep the food for the garden birds - nuts and all - and a rack on which we store all our vegetables over the winter, ample food for anyone, and yet this cratur chewed on a nylon sail, sail bag and a bit of rope!!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

How did these beasties ever get the better of Tom or Mr. Jinks?

Having recently had a problem with mices I can say yes they do like salt. Concrete walls are no problem - they enlarged the hole around the plastic plug I had put in, but gaffer tape.... is mouse proof - one bite and they left it alone!

Therefore old sails with GT repairs must be the way to go.

We were down the beach a couple of years ago helping someone rig his (unused for a year) Hobie 18 when a mouse ran across the beach. A chorus of "Where did that come from" was followed by "Oh that's where"...Huge hole and a lovely warm nest appeared from the mainsail.
If anyone is looking for an 18ft beach cat with go slower sail I can point you in the right direction.
