.........the sadistic marine engine designers who designed impellors in such a way that you have to take the pump off to get out the impellor and the boat builders who leave so little room that you have to use a mirror to see what you're doing.

(You can tell I'm livid ! )

Easy to solve that problem get rid of that old converted rickshaw engine and get yourself a nice proper marine engine with loads of back up dealers and who put ALL the important bits that you need to get at ie.water pumps,alternators,belty bits at the front.(Ps just in case your wondering its V.....o/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I know the feeling, I'm thinging of taking up yoga just so I can double myself up, have my head touch my feet whilst standing astride the engine bay cover supports. Mines a yankie boat and I can't see how any large arsed USA nice person could get down there. There must be a market for little Japanese machanics who can simply jump down there and walk about. Anyone know of one?

I was told by the main dealer not to bother changing the impellor after just 4 years, that it would be perfect. Guess what? He was right. But I still put a new one in anyway.

How long do they generally last in the green lumps?

Oh yeah! and the best part is when the intake pipe doesn't have enough flex to lift it above the water level, damn scary trying to remove the pump while also trying to stop the sea coming in!!

Still all in a days work... getting cramp at that crucial point also makes things more fun! :)

Try Princess they must have had, a man with small hands and rubber arms, that are reverse jointed.

With 7.4l Mercruisers, not only is the pump way down almost under the engine, but it is integrated with the fuel pump, so you have to disconnect water and fuel lines whilst standing on your head. Had to stand on my head in the engine room out on Sarasota Bay the evening before last when a water hose, which is almost under the gear box and connected to the oil cooler, came off while at speed. I thought another boat was about to pass me, but it was the noise from my pt exhaust with no water going through it. Then the overheat alarm sounded..... It took me about 30 min to get it back on securely, 'cos I'm not very small.
