Hi all
I took SpottyDog out today, after nearly 4 months of non use.
Spotty is a Sealine F43 2002 with 2 x Volvo TAD63P's (370 hp).
Engines run every two weeks.
Low hours since last service.
Will rev to 3200 in neutral, but only 2500 under load.
Max speed now around 20 knots, before 30 knots(ish).
No excessive smoke, but loads (and I mean loads) of soot all over the stern.
Hull was cleaned last December by a diver, I know I should really bring her out for a proper clean, but the anti fouling and anodes were good, so I was was hoping to make it last to the end of the season.
My first thought is the bottom is the problem and the fouling is stopping the engine achieving full revs, and I will have to get her lifted and cleaned but the guys on the boat today (fishing buddies) think it could be a turbo (could hear them run up), or something more serious.
Any thoughts welcome please.
Cheers

Roy, get her over to the sea lift. You have not used the boat, hull is probably not too bad, but I bet the props are really bad. That stretch of the river is bad, the F37 I used suffered from the same thing. used to take the boat over to Cowes at a struggle came back at a canter. You can't leave the boat that length of time there.

What do you think will be on them, barnacles ?

Probably. They used paint scrapper to get em off at sea lift. Diver in my view is a waste, needs a good blast from the powerwash and then hand job. Running the engines does nothing, needs to be under load, and even then it won't keep the props clean, but you have not used the boat enough to keep the props "clean".

You used the boat so much more when you were at universal, that is the only thing that has changed - non use. Engines working harder so makes more exhaust and soot. Clean her off and then use her! I will come fishing I promise. :D

Relax, well not too much your fouled bottom is overloading engine like crazy.

Get the the bottom clean then take the boat for a run, you are doing all the correct things (testing high idle).

Forget the gloomy fisherman, you will soon see 2,800 rpm plus again!

Are both engines having the same issues?

Thanks buddy, you didn't miss much today , only one fish all day, but great to be out on the water again.

Oh special thanks go to all the nice raggies, who decided to use me a a turning point (despite my black ball) or came so close to the stern to wave and inquire how well we
were doing ?.... funnily enough we were done too chatty, perhaps I can return the favor soon....

Hi Roy, my money like all the rest is on the bottom and props.

I went under mine today and was amazed at how bad it was and you have not used yours anywhere near as much this year.

As has already been menioned use Sea Lift. You can get a lift and atifoul (you provide it they paint it) and two more lifts in a year for about £550 I think (I got a special deal because they moved me so can't remember first quote). It's a nice day out as well, you can even take SWMBO shopping whilst they do it.....

Let us know how it goes.

All the best.

Hi Peter, do you mean you were under yours at the Sealift today ?
I do remember some one posting a really cheap lift deal recently, in Cowes I think ?
Cant afford Swimbo shopping and a lift out !

I might be being a bit thick here but why would a fouled hull make black smoke?

Because when you're dragging 500 kilos of fruites de mer along with you the smoothness of the hull seems to be impaired somewhat,:D the donks are working overtime burning loads of fuel trying to get the boat through the water and the unburnt fuel ends up as soot over the back of the boat.

from memory this lot cost 10kts and 800 rpm, after cleaning it was like a greyhound out of the trap:eek:
