Seeing the pictures on here of lake windermere! I know people have suffered with their homes which is far worse, but I just hate seeing boats damaged like this. I hope they are all covered by insurance and get their boats sorted out for next year!

Good luck to all the boat owners who have lost or had their pride and joy damaged like this.

All the best

That's so sad. As others have said how did that happen? As I understand it Cumbria had a LOT of rain and consequent flooding, but with all due respect, boats are made to float and it sort of doesn't really matter how much higher the water came up does it? They sort of float on top of it. So how come these sank?

The only think I can think of is that they were tied tightly to fixed moorings and when the water level rose, they were dragged under? If that's the case then surely the marina are negligent in that they should have adjusted the length of the lines to suit the water level?

A few years ago we had similar flooding on the Gt Ouse and my marina, although badly flooded with their workshop and offices under a foot or so of water, diligently went round in the pouring rain in a dinghy making sure the lines were adjusted correctly.

I believe they sank due to ropes being too taught and being tethered to fixed pontoons. The waters came up very quickly and the staff and boat owners didnt have the time to adjust all of the ropes.

The storm was recorded as a 1 in 1000 year event and wasnt fully expected. A sad loss of a lot of boats one suspects.

As i understand it wasnt safe to be anywhere near the marina in question. The waters had become a rapidly rising raging torrent.

That is terrible, I know so many of those boats!

I remember the last flood in Jan 2004...my Regal was tied up, my speedboat and dads sailing boat. Went up at 8pm with a wetsuit. Had to cut the warps as the lake had risen 3ft! That looks more like 5ft. No chance that anyone would go on the Jetties in that weather. Boats are insured, life is precious.

Terrible waste..
