to change the bulb. It's a Hellamarine SSb 3562 10 watt light on a Merry Fisher 805. On the under surface is a half inch square spring loaded plate. It looks as if pressing this should release something but it doesn't. Any suggestions?

Just bought a new total assembly (Port, by coincidence and that reference ) as I knocked the lens section into the oggin.

ASAP Supplies, about £10 total.

The moral of this: If you need to remove by pressing that spring loaded plate it's almost impossible, but if you don't want to remove it then don't let your mooring warp anywhere near it!!

I suggest you press harder, and give it a bit of a wiggle. Also maybe try some releasing fluid (Fairy, WD40 etc etc)

Good luck

It's a bit fiddly, and yes you really have to push the wee plate in hard. The top of the lens unit is held in place by a very small lug which gives-way eventually.

When you get into the unit you'll find the bulb is a bit special and has two "spikes" on one end. These locate the bulb in two corresponding cut-outs in the mounting - goodness knows why?!!!! ASAP Supplies sell these special bulbs - at around £3 each.
They are a very good bunch to deal with, and post stuff immediately. Very reliable company.

I've got some of these and they are fiddly to get apart. Once you see them apart you can understand where to apply pressure. Press the button as hard as you can and pull the bottom of the lenses bit forward at the same time plus a bit of wiggling.
I've put some vaseline in between the two parts to waterproof and lubricate.
Glad to see that asap sell the bulbs, I need some spares. Although i'm considering leds.

It's to get the feed and return as they are simply double contact offset pin auto bulbs, £2.80 +VAT for a pack of 10

I don't follow you there. I have other "two-ended" bulbs of same size and purpose, but without the "spikes on either end. They can be mounted either way up/down.

And is that what you sell them for? If so that's a b****y site less that ASAP and others.!!!!

I have probably misunderstood the description, yours seem to be some derivation of a festoon bulb, completely different from the ones I meant.

They are basically festoon bulbs but with a little 'crown' soldered on. I'm experimenting with unsoldering the 'crown' from a blown one and using it on a cheap one from Motormania. I reckon you don't need to solder them.

Cunning! Sounds sensible. Keep us posted, please
I've removed the 'crowns' from my bulbs and can now use motor bulbs costing a quid. I found the best way to remove them is to hold the bulb cap with one pair of pliers and the 'crown' with long nosed pliers and hold them in the flame of a blowlamp for a few seconds whilst pulling gently. The bulbs I've used are from Autobulbs direct as they didn't stock them at my local stores. The ref is 264 (42mm) Standard Replacement Festoon Bulb. The length is important - 42mm. The 'crowns' fit on securely so there's no need to solder them on. Useful saving but I will swap to LEDs when funds allow.
