Just arrived at the boat, armed with a satalite tv reciever. Sick of bad reception. The TV's worked perfectly most of the night, on the old ten quid thingy. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

We dont need 900 chanels.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well thats good, becuase you dont actually get 900 channels, you get the same 5 repeated, mixed up and rescheduled ad infinetum...... plus shopping...

Oh, and some "news".

and a bunch of radio stations that you can get on your transisitor....

Did you buy that one from Maplins someone linked to t'other day ?

Either way, tell us how you get on fitting it - I might get one if they're easy(ish) to fit, 'cos my new aerial's not too hot.

well there's this little box that I assumed was it, then there's a great big box of toilet seat sized or similar, now where's that to go

Hayden, don't mind the long instructions, it's much simpler than it looks and realistically there are about 14 useable channels on the Astra 28E Satellite

[*]BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4
[*]ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4
[*]BBC News 24, CNN, Sky News
[*]Nat Geographic, Men and Motors, 1 Movie Channel
[/list]Quick Start Guide
 1. Assemble the Sat Dish Antenna - try suction cup mount 1st time
 2. Ensure the LNB thingey mounted on the end of the dish stalk is rotated to a VERTICAL position (see diagram this is essential or no signal ever). Optionally this may require slight adjustment at the end of step 9 to improve signal strength and quality.
 3. Mount the antenna roughly pointing 28 degrees east of due south and almost at the horizon or just a degree or two above. Use compass for rough guide
 4. Antenna must have an unobstructed view of the Sat (ie bearing 152 True approx. No obstruction, building or tree in immediate way)
 5. Connect TV to Sat box using Scart lead (TV Out socket)
 6. Connect Sat Box to anntenna using coaxial cable (LNB in screw plug)
 7. Power Up TV + Sat box and set TV to display AV source (ie show the set top box display (will probably display words "no signal"). Ensure the TV is display something from set tv box, either a menu or a logo, etc
 8. Press INFO button on SAT remote - this will bring up the signal strength and signal quality displays
 9. Now align the Satellite dish more precisly in tiny adjustments left and right, and up/down to maximise the signal bars on the display. Should get over 70% and this could take you a few minutes the 1st time you've ever done it, but in future (ie after boat moored elsewhere) it should take less than a minute. Ensure the SATELITE in the INFO menu was set to "Astra 28E" during this step.
 10. Press Menu->Installation->Auto Scan on SAT remote
 11. Goto Satellite and choose "Astra 28E" (ie the one the antenna is roughly pointed at)
 12. Goto Scan Mode and set to FREE to limit scan to freeview channels that don't need a paid viewing card
 13. Goto Search and press OK to scan for channels, this will take a few minutes and then SAVE when finished.
 14. You can now use the EPG button to view the channel you want.
Afterwards you can use the MENU to delete unwanted channels if you want. I usually limit my Auto Scan to a) FREE channels and b) TV only channels skipping radio ones so that the channel list in the EPG is small and excludes all the encrypted subscription ones I can't view anyway. Have fun, it's a bit pickey 1st time round, but you should find it easier on repeats.

There's loads of other stuff you can do in the menus but that's all you really need. Getting the antenna pointing at the correct sat in the sky with the LNB truely vertial is the key quickly getting a signal.
Enjoy!
