I can\'t believe it - is it me?

YM this month says that the repairs (repairs presumably not the salvage and towage etc) to GMIV has cost £220K. £220K? I know a bulkhead was cracked and they did the keel bolts, reskinned six cold-moulded layers for a length on the starboard side but this does seem grossly excessive to me. Or has wooden boat owning suddenly become prohibitive without me noticing.

YEEEES.... THE MIND BOGGLES !

Is it a bit of the tail now wagging the dog - or is it all to fit in with predetermined schedules ?

Never liked the idea of taking inexperienced non-sailors with special needs on GM. Just sailing it round the World would make big enough demands on skipper and mate, never mind the distractions of a less than competent crew.
But - very pleased that it survives.

Usual rule for repairs to wooden boat: take yard estimate, triple it..

I have found this to be roughly correct, where repairs to hidden damage are concerned.

Case in point, Mirelle, October 1987 storm damage, first estimate £12K, eventual cost £36K (insured value £16K...)

It probably applies to frozen snot yots, as well, except that, being consumer durables, rather than objects of desire they get scrapped.

On this basis, the repairs to GM4 are about par for the course.

Re: I can\'t believe it - is it me?

At first glance I too thought it seemed a lot, then deducted some tax, some raw materials, some surveyor fees, few flights and bits and bobs, profit, then divided by an hourly rate its not seem so far out.

I know form first hand experience that repairing a moulded hull is not difficult or expensive for materials but is time consuming and to get down through the layers ends up being a big job.

Re: I can\'t believe it - is it me?

The repair shed was free, overtime was free. I accept Mirelle's point having had some experience myself that way but it still seems a very large sum of money.

And bb yes frozen snot is GRP. Except of course that the former is slightly more impermible and doesn't get osmosis

The late L. Francis Herreshoff...

...coined the phrase, in one of his books.

Cannot now recall whether it was in "The Compleat Cruiser" or "Sensible Cruising Designs", but anyway they are both very well worth reading.

Re: The late L. Francis Herreshoff...

After Hermees was broken into by some lowlife, the door to the cabin was smashed in half,
new door built as oridginel ie, same as old one, £1.000!

2 ply panels and 5 bits of mahogany /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

ps; does that make the boat worth £0000000s

Re: The late L. Francis Herreshoff...

Umm look. I'm having a rethink here. I thought my future lay in the occasional bit of consultancy after retiring but I am now thinking of changing that to woodworking.
