from the 44 foot motor cat on fire off shoreham way at the moment- just come from the boat where we listened to it all happening on channel 16. They abandoned to their liferaft and Littlehampton lifeboat picked them up; someone else (a warship I believe )is standing by to try to put the fire out, but the flares are going off, they've got 200 gallons of fuel on board plus 2 big gas bottles, one engine was left running on tickover so the boat is making way.
Reason for post- apart from sharing horrid ghoulishness- is to say that having recently bought a liferaft, I am going out SOON to get a handheld VHF: and also following my recent seacheck I will definitely be upgrading my fire extinguishers etc and discussing fire drill with my partner. It shouldn't need someone elses severe misfortune to prompt me to not just look at my safety systems (Sea Check thoroughly recomended) but to ACT as well.
