A straight reply

OK, you have convinced me that you deserve a straight reply. If you standardise the components that make up the system, then two things will happen: a, they will get cheap, b. will be maintainable by non-speciliasts.

As peeps here know I'm a technoklutz but am well capable of diagnosing a problem on electrics and electronics and replacing the bit that has failed. For instance I used to carry a spare autopilot because we relied upon it to get us across oceans and I still carry a 2 spare GPS for similar reasons.

I'd envisage a similar path being followed for this particular experiment. Fundementally, it will have to work using microprocessor contolled switching gear that could be provided as black boxes with LEDs showing whether they were working a bit like the microprocessors that some people use for managing their batteries.

Now, I'm not saying it will be everyone's cup of tea or that it would be sutiable for every boat nor am I saying that this will happen just that it is a possibility and we won't know unless we try.

Well, at least I don't start getting all snurped up over a bit of new technology and as someone "who has always been at the front of their own field" I don't get precious about it either.

Plenty of places running diesel engine courses but none doing simple boat electrics. I am always thankful for the retired old boys at my club for their advice and help, but mid ocean I might be scuppered!!
