I have a auto steering system fitted to my boat, its a Navico HS8000. I want to remove this, but not sure if I can just take out the Navico unit and join the hydraulic lines together. The steering is controlling 2 x DP290 legs, at the moment if I turn the steering wheel all that happens is the header tank overflows.

I have various bits and pieces for the Navico system, (quite possibly a whole system) so if anyone is in need of anything please PM me. It was half fitted to the boat when I bought her so have no idea if any of it is working, although I do know the auto helm hydraulic unit is quite recent.

Any advice is appreciated

On most A/P pumps there are three ports, to ram/Starboard, to ram/Port, and a return to the helm pump. sounds like your one has never been fitted correctly. Check the pump to see if it has three pipes connected.

Read this not sure what you have but they are all similar

But from what is said here you may find you want to get rid of it altogether

Whilst the information on the Simrad was helpful and showed various system options, the Navico helm pump unit i have seems to be different in that it has 2 hydraulic pipes, 1 header pipe to header tank, and another clear pipe from the back of the pump to the Navico self steer distribution unit. Basically I am going to remove all the Navico stuff, join the pipes direct to each other and blank off the clear pipe - then see what happens! The ram is behind the engines and I want to do the bleeding whilst the engines are out for the engine swap as it is nigh on impossible to reach it when they are in. I am hoping i do not need to buy a new helm pump.

If you have this system

and the pipes are as you describe then almost certainly the installation was attempted by someone clueless about hydraulics and autopilots.
Find a good engineer locally, there is bound to be someone that can be recommended by a forum reader.
Re the bleed pipes from the ram, if access is poor then now is the time to fit extension pipes to the bleed nipples.... find a good engineer!

Yes, that is the system that was fitted - I have now stripped most of it out, a few bits left, but now i am left with the basic Wagner system which I am going to refill at the weekend with fingers firmly crossed. Thanks for the help.

If anyone wants a Navico 8000 full system, or would like it for parts, I have one you can take for free, just pay postage or pickup. PM me if you are interested.

PM sent, not too sure if it will get to you though. Sorry to hear you have been unable to get it to work.
