I've purchased a hydraulic autopilot from the States and the manufacturer recommends the hydraulic fluid used must be equivalent to specification MIL - H - 5606. I've found one place that sells it in the UK, but only in 20 litre quantities and that for £140 which sounds OTT. Also found out it's widely used in the aircraft industry. Anyone know where I can get around 10 litres at a resonable cost please?

Thanks,

Kris

The only grade I can find to this spec is Aeroshell 41, described as "a mineral hydraulic oil of improved cleanliness and performance." This means you certainly cannot use an automotive hydraulic fluid as this will react with seals and possibly other parts. Except Citroen, who use mineral oils, and maybe some other manufacturers. There are several suffixes to 5606, letters A-E, so you need to know which one.

Try an industrial hydraulics supplier, they may be able to find an equivalent. Alternatively look at http://www.aeroshell.com/products.php3 for some info and a contact e-mail.

Thanks everybody for your help. I've managed to find out that the same spec fluid is used in Teleflex systems and they have a distributor in Poole.

Many thanks,

Kris
