Hydraulic crimpers

I have one like that though I am sure I paid less on ebay. RThey are great but yes you need a ratrchet one for the smaller car type crimps. You can also use them for criping ormiston type ferrules though I would not use it for any serios application. Mine has paid for itself.

I also have a similar set that will go up to 140mm cable. I have found that I need to use the die's one size down to ensure the crimp stays put. This may be a problem that is unique to my set but I have had failures using the "correct" dies.

No, I've found the same. One size down gets good and tight, and looks like one part when sawn through. Stated size can be removed by hand with a bit of persistence.

I bought one for my project as In needed to replace all the battery leads.
Bear in mind that you neded to match the dies with the correct size lugs for the size of cable.
As others have said, a ratchet crimper for smaller terminals.

A good buy, IMHO

I bought a set when re-wiring my boat and can recommend them. As others have stated I found that using a die size one size smaller resulted in far better crimps. The lugs are cheap enough to buy a few spare to practice with.

A short length of heat shrink over the end of the lug and onto the cable makes a neat job.

I also found this out on my first trial crimp, the crimped lug would quite easily pull off the cable end, the next size down will give an excellent crimp which is impossible to pull off.
