hydraulic AP pump and installation

Depends much if power steering or not.

I had same issue when selecting an AP and pump for the existing ram on my twin rudder non power assisted steering (shafts boat).

Every supplier asked just said "take the bigger one" when discussing the two potential versions. But the bigger was more than double the cost so started my own research to make right decision. All makes' dealers were equally useless.

At the end of the day I needed the smaller capacity pump, however my local pusher helpfully arranged for a meeting with the Simrad distributor representative who confirmed my findings and added "I can give you a special price on a full kit with the large pump if you'll accept it without original boxes etc." Allegedly had been ordered by mistake for a customer who changed his mind, but I got the big for less than the list price of the small :)

On an outboard boat the hull's response to rudder is very good because you shift the thrust direction, so the capacity of the pump should be enough to produce a full stroke of the ram in approx ten seconds. Hence the stroke length needed and the ram volume will be deciding factors.

They need careful matching as if the pump capacity is too high it will result in a rapid hard over of the helm which is dangerous and positively scary at speed.

Indeed. Some auto pilots (e.g. my AP24 system) at installation can be set to mode Powerboat, then will determine the steering performance by the speed of the boat, so no problem in that regard ;)

Edit: At the time of collecting facts I also noted that full steering movement - from stop to stop - should be 5½ - 6½ turns of the wheel. Hence the steering pump output volume of fluid at this amount of pumping should be enough for a full ram stroke.
