Good morning,

Something we thought might be of interest: http://www.mby.com/videos/gear/92361-2

Actor Steve McFadden (Phil Mitchell in EastEnders, soap fans) has added a Torqeedo battery bank and a pair electric drives that deploy from the bathing platform to his boat to create the first ever hybrid Botnia Targa. It's a neatly integrated system and a useful solution for boosting range and offering near silent running.

The full feature is in the August issue of MBY, which is on newsstands next Thursday and should be with subscribers just before.

Cheers,

Jack

bloody brilliant. Hats off to him, done a good job, how the heck that genny got installed in that small space is a feat of engineering in itself.

Looks like a great installation. I like the swing up/down electric drives. Diesel electric drive would be cool, slow speeds on the batteries, want to go fast turn on a well insulated generator. Very little noise, no vibration.

How about a catamaran style boat, with electric motor, and you drive your Tesla on to it and plug it in??

Very nice installation. However I can't help feeling that a Botnia Targa 25 isn't the best starting point for the perfect Med boat. Where do you lie down and sunbath or get 6 people around a table for lunch? As for self-sufficiency, will you really be going long distances in something so small or spending days at anchor?

I like it. If you read the article it says that Phil Mitchell has owned boats up to 72ft so he knows how big a boat he wants, and money can’t be a limiting factor as that’s an expensive conversion. He has the added benefit of two engine maneuvering in port and single engine economy on the open water.
I have seen a small solar powered boat with the same generator installed, the toilet was removed as the heads was the only space available

I like the fact that Phil probably could've had a choice of swanky Sunseeker style boats but chose to do something different and interesting with his cash instead.

I thought he was just a small time east-end thug but he's gone right up in my estimations.

He used to have a 30/40 something foot sunseeker moored in puerto portals some years ago. Where does he keep the botnia?

You do realise that his name is Steve and Eastenders isn't a documentary :).

Apparently, he's not one of the better paid Eastenders cast members (<£150k) so probably isn't as wealthy as some people might think.

Anyhow, as MapisM says, people should have the smallest boat that meets their needs not the largest so if Steve has got everything he needs in 25ft then fair play to him.

He may well be on £150k nowadays with less storylines featuring his chatracter but, he was on £360k per annum in 2006 plus all the other appearance fees.....I wouldn't mind being a £1 behind him:cool:

The video didnt mention how the steering works when under electric power I dont think.

Does it just rely on the volvo leg acting as a rudder?

Or do you use each torqueedo throttle independently to steer?

or do the torqueedo drives turn some how?

anyone know? presume a combination of the first two methods above, I'm guessing the drive themselves dont rotate
