Hustler 35'

Re: Hustler 35\'

hi, bought one on wednesday! (boomerang of conway, any previous owners here??)

i had a fair bit of difficulty finding out very much info on the internet. if you pm me you can have what i have. i have not sailed her yet as she is out the water... if you speak to people who were sailing in the 70's they speak favourably. they were fast and so raced a fair bit (i think one won a fastnet race)

designed by don pye and kim holman, built by tyler boat co (now defunct) and fitted out by landamore (still going strong, but never got any info from them. maybe they have none.) 44 (i believe) were made. i have spoken with david cooper of holman and pye, he has retired now, but will get you a copy of drawings for £40.

ours is an early one 1971, our surveyor noted small movement in one of the chainplates, and we are consequently beefing up deck hull join at this area. on a later hustler 35 that he had surveyed it seemed to come with a sturdier join/box section strengthening, perhaps there was a change mid production? some water leaking out crack rudder, presumably as it had slammed over while reversing (he suggesting fitting limiting collete (sp?) to rudder stock. base of mast some corrosion, we will have to sort this within a year or two. either build up mast step, and shorten mast slightly, or find an old mast etc (unsuccesful so far) or Sparcare can do a doubler that fits over the bottom 1" for £260... we also have some delamination of internal woodwork lower down, however not structural, so will wait till a sunny day.... keel bolts and hull/deckbolts stainless /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif if she has had osmosis it will have been fixed by now, and if she hasn't then unlikely now after all those years (personal view!)

supposed to be excellent in heavy weather, certainly the previous owner was out to st kilda, and over to norway, from west coast scotland, in 2008. big cockpit, plenty storage. less space down below than modern designs of same length, but looks a lot better from the outside...

which one are you looking at cos there are a few for sale at the moment /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif generally seems like a lot of boat for the money.

Re: Hustler 35\'

Have sailed a H 30 for many years, it is smaller but basically the same design. Superb to windward. Superb heavy weather boat. Built like a BSH. Looks good. Poor accommodation compared with AWB's. Poor in light winds. Wet to windward.

At the end of the day, a modern classic. I will be jealous!

Re: Hustler 35\'

Hello,
I found one in Amsterdam NL. Looks good. Since I am planing to keep her in Montenegro it is going to be a bit difficult to transport
the boat there. I gave an offer. She is very appealing outside but
not much space inside. If the deal is made I need to find transport solution of course reasonable one.
Thank you for your information. Be in contact.
regards

Re: Hustler 35\'

I had one from mid 80's to mid 90's. Superb seaboat but a bit cramped internally compared to modern boats. Mine was built in 1973 and had been a DIY fit out which was a bit tatty in places. Excellent in strong winds, especially to windward, but needed to be kept moving in the light stuff - once it stopped took a lot to get going again. As somone has said, definitely a pretty boat. Huge cocpit lockers but beware filling them and putting too much weight in the stern as she will pitch badly in a short chop.
I have very fond memories of her and still have a picture on my office wall

Re: Hustler 35\'

Just noticed this post re Amsterdam. What sail number? I believe mine went to Holland in about 1997.
