I have a Hustler 25, which I bought and sailed up from Falmouth last year. She is a very sea worthy, however the engine has given me some cause for concern and therefore I am looking to replace my current engine.
I currently have the original Yanmar flat bed diesel engine and have been told that a straight replacement with a Yanmar GM10 is the best option. However I am concerned about the power and the noise, as currently I really struggle punching through tide in Chichester Harbour.
Does anyone have any suggestions or are there any other Hustler 25 owners out there?
 
I don't have any experience with the H25, but as a general principle, I don't know many people who complain of having too much power!

You say you stuggle against the tide. How much power do you have at present? It sounds as though you could use significantly more, and IMHO, this should be the starting point for your project. Thirty years ago, 10HP would have been thought to be plenty for a boat of that size, but nowdays, based on my experience with replacing a tired 7hp within my Snapdragon 24 with 28HP, I reckon 15 would be a sensible minimum. My 28 HP is way over the top. I got the right prop on last weekend and did 7kts down Portsmouth harbour with power to spare /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Shame about the 7HP flexible coupling... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

New engine beds to take the right engine aren't an insurmountable problem, and their cost won't be a huge part of the whole job. You'll appreciate having enough umph for long after you've forgotten the aggravation and cost of doing a proper job, but if you haven't got enough power, that's an ongoing aggravation and, possibly, a safety issue.

You will probably need a new prop and, as I found out, quite possibly, a flexible coupling as well.

I fitted a 1GM in a Stella a few years ago and found it gave more than enough power. If you fit a bigger engine you may need a bigger prop and it would be a pity to compromise the sailing performance of such a great sailing boat.
If I were doing the job now I would give serious consideration to the Beta twin engine.
No complaints about the Yanmar though.
I know a couple of Hustler 25.5s were fitted with Sole diesels. Presumably space is fairly limited.

Do a Google search for Beta Marine Diesels, you'll find plenty of info.
I didnt have a folding prop on the Stella as they are long keel and One Design rules prohibited folding props. I did however fit a 2 blade prop so that it could hide behind the keel. This was against the advice of the engine "experts" but we raced the boat and didn't want to lose performance. The two blade worked fine and the boat sailed much faster than another Stella fitted with 3 blades.
I no longer have that boat. I fitted a folding prop to my current 32 footer mainly to increase sailing performance but got a bonus in improved astern ability.
Incidentally the Yanmar is a fine engine, it's just worth checking out the Beta.

If I had the choice between the Beta and the Yanmar, I would always go for the Beta 13.5HP - its big advantage over the Yanmar is that it is heat exchanger cooled,(the Yanmar is sea water cooled) so no internal engine corrosion, it'll run at a better temperature, much smother and you could fit a calorifier if you wanted. It is only a bit more expensive than the Beta 10HP version.

I am one myself and have the pleasure of owning hull No2, Satsuma.
At some point in her past, the engine was replaced with a vetus (mitsubishi) twin, 8.2Kw/11Hp complete with technodrive (gearbox), She also has a folding prop fitted.
I have never found her to be wanting, and will push 5kts against the wind with ease. Having sailed her from the UK to Turkey I encountered a wide variety of weather conditions and never found her wanting for power, even if I was slowed to 4kts against a F7. My only gripe, is the space available to service etc, but I think this will be a problem with almost any small boat. I hope this helps.
I quite agree, these are eminently seaworthy boats, and I felt safer in her halfway across Biscay in a F7, than I have felt in a Bavaria 38 around the needles with aF5 blowing!
 
A friend of mine has a H25 and recently replaced the engine with a Beta fitted by Dell Quay Yacht Yard.

I'm not sure what size he fitted but as he races and any additional weight is unacceptable I'm guessing its the bare minimum
 
Possible (probable) that your existing engine is so past its best that it's not producing all the ponies it is supposed to, which would be a reason for disappointing performance. I used to sail an H25.5 with a Yanmar when it was close to being a new boat, and never noticed a lack of performance. A new engine of the same size as the original but producing all the advertised power will probably be sufficient.


(Anyone know what happened to Moie Maisie, red hull, white deck, grey non-slip?)
 
Interesting that Rikcrane's last post was over 5 yrs ago.......Expect he has fixed the engine by now.



And yes, I do get caught by the odd out of date post.
