Steering gets boring quite quick.
Now my comrade, Bernard will steer for hours, obviously in a symbiotic relationship with the wheel and completely in touch with all the natural elements.
Whereas when I've got the driving duties I start to think I need a leak, or a cup of tea, or one of those bananas or a look at the chart.
OK I get a thrill careering round a point with tide and wind behind. But most of the time I get the sort of ennui experienced by dcadent french aristos.
What does anybody else like doing best??

We fight for the helm.

Love it. The autohelm only goes on when the engine starts.

Hear Hear.

"George" only takes over when under motor power like when there is NO wind.

Correction - I sometime let him drive when I nip below for another beer or bottle of "vino collapso" or another G&T (with ice and lemon) - sometimes I just lash SHMO to the tiller

I know Corish Maid is only a cruising boat, and cruising is perfectly able to be carried out by some means of autopilot, but when you are on the helm, it is quite windy, and you just maybe are catching up a racy craft covered in hairy yotties with their feet over the weather rail, well who cares about autohelms. We passed them, I couldn't look back because we had far too much sail up and were at risk of broaching. They were broaching all over the place. Now thats what I call good fun.

My favourite point of sailing is feet up on the cockpit seats, reading a book in the sun on a broad reach with the autohelm looking after the boat.

If I need an adrenaline rush I can always glance up at the ships wandering past as I slant diagonally past them on the way down to Brittany.
