Has any one got the work shop manual for the "Hurth ZF 5M Gearbox".
They could post or pm me the exploded page of it's innards. with a bit of the instruction details for setting up the clutches.
Thanks in anticipation David.

The only adjustment I found on mine was the tapered roller thrust bearings at either end of both shafts, they the preload is set up using shims which are to be found inside the shaft end cover caps, the ones with 4 bolts on them, and the bearing retainers, 1 inside the bell housing and 1 forward of the output flange.
I dident completly dismantle all the componants or clutch plates from the shafts when I repaired and modified my reverse idler gear carrier shaft, which had come loose in the casing, (it is an interference fit set up but they are known for loosening in the casing, I had a maching shop make me a modified beefier shaft with a more secure fitting arrangement.
Will have a look for some pics of the mods.
I take it you are getting rattling from your clutches and you are going to try to adjust them?
I would be grearful if you let me know how you get on when you have it done.
I have a manual in pdf format which I can send if you pm me with your email add.

Just found the manual in pdf form.

Well the truth is I bought it off ebay I have not yet received it but from the description it sounds like it will need a little TLC, not noisy, but slipping in forward.
My intention is to hook it up to an inboard engine air cooled dry exhaust Genny unit in a 14ft clinker for use on fresh water and canals.
I got a Stuart Turner box a couple of weeks ago but it was not ideal not a reduction box just the Forward-Neutral-Reverse.
It will go back on ebay when I get the chance.

A photo of the little boat all this is for.

Hi, would you still happen to have the manual and be able to send it to me. We have a boat in the club in Madison with this transmissions and would like to take it out for repair. Would be great.

Hi Guys

Just an update regarding HBW 50 gearboxes.

I had some communication (PM – Private Mail) with Clyde Wanderer, thank you for your assistance.

I have been searching for a person who knew anything about the Hurth HBW 50. In the final analysis I contacted Bob Knowles of Bob Knowles Plant Services Ltd. Leicester. www.bobknowles.demon.co.uk and actually sent the gearbox to him. He received it on a Thursday Morning and rang me Thursday Afternoon to say it was repaired and under test. He is not cheap but he was the only person who expressed any understanding regarding the gearbox and had the parts in stock.

I hope this post is of some benefit to you. It took a long time and some amount of luck to find Bob. I still have to get the engine back into the boat but at least there is a schedule in place.

Fair sailing

Heber.
