Thanks to previous posts tracked down the recommended oil for this gear box - ATF Type A. Congratulates myself and dash out to the local motor factors (3 in all) to purchase same, just before they close.

Came back without the oil and totally confused by the range of ATF oils available, none with Type A on the label. Type Q and F were on the shelf along with synthetic - the motor factors couldn't help because their reference material is limited to motor vehicles.

If you have the answer at your finger tips, I would love to hear from you. I had planned to change the oil this weekend.

Get a good quality ATF oil it should say DEXRON 2 or 3.I use Comma oil in my Hurth. You should have a filter which will need changing, mine is part of the filler opening and just lifts out. The one in mine is a stainless mesh and really well made so I just wash it well with white spirit and use it again.I also change the oil every season.

Further to previous dont forget to check oil level after running the engine as if you have an oil cooler you will lose some oil in that.It is best to check the oil immediately after stopping the engine then you will get a truer reading.

Sorry about the delay in replying - been away all weekend - cleaning, polishing and antifouling. Will change the oil after she is in the water.

Thanks for the help everyone, much appreciated.

I also have a Hurth reduction gear, and it needs ATF - Type A suffix A oil, which being an old formulation is not too common.

If you cannot find Type A suffix A, I have found that the standard which seems to be closest is the Dexron II / E
