I have a “hurth” gearbox, the only identification i can find on it is “hurth munchen west germany”. If I shift from neutral to forward quickly, drive does not engage but moving gear shift slowly then it engages and responds to all rev settings – I have checked it is not cavitation! I presume my problem indicates a need for service? The engine is a perkins 4.154 (62 hp) and the boat was built in 1982. advice would be much appreciated.

I believe Hurth is a subsiduary of ZF Friedrichshafen AG, whose UK agent is ZF Great Britain Ltd., Abbeyfield Road, Lenton, Nottingham NG7 2SX, tel: (0115) 9869211. These gearboxes were popular and if you don't fancy DIY any competent service engineer should be able to help.

But it sounds like this could be a slipping control-cable problem rather than anything wrong with the gear-box. Check the lower attachment point on the cable.

Hi, I have just had my hurth serviced, exactly the same symptons. the series of clutch paltes were worn, creating the lag in engagement. Do first check that the control arm is getting the correct travel.
