My Hurth 50 gearbox failed two weeks ago and has since been condemned as being beyond repair by the importer. They offer a rebuilt replacement. Is it normal for a gearbox to be stuffed after 3000 hours? Engine is a Perkins Perama 29hp.

I would have thought 3000 hours was a tad early for a gearbox to fail to that extent, but it would depend on what stresses and strains it has been under.

I would suggest a second opinion myself, and if it IS beyond repair, then I would be having a good look at other things like alignment, engine mountings Etc.

But I'm no marine engineer, so others may have a different opinion.

We lost all propulsion when punching into a focre 7 and short, steep waves. Reverse gear still worked, forward did engage, but lost all drive as soon as revs were increased.

I was called out to exactly the same problem with the same engine/gearbox setup,
I did rebuild the gearbox and there is a bronze spacer which wears out and allows the "cluster" to seperate, I made a new one but some parts are not avaiable so it was always to be a temp repair until a replacement gearbox was fitted.
With yours I now know of four identical ones that have failed, I would advise you buy a new gearbox..
