Hurricane Dorian

Excellent day for sailing :D

In all seriousness, I hope everyone stays safe and moves to safe harbors if they can. Not some I'd want to be right now at any rate.

Much of that immense energy is likely to come barrelling across the North Atlantic, later, in our direction.

Remember Boscastle.....

>We had a brilliant sailing holiday in the Abacos many years ago but the whole place is barely above sea level. Dorian is going to wreak a huge amount of damage.

Jane I did the same it is a wonderful place to sail but as you say the damage wil be huge plus flooding as you can see on the TV reports.

The media are speculating on Dorian's effect on the UK, one says we are due for a spell of cold wet and windy, another one is promising a scorching heat wave..

That's pretty clever of them. The storm is moving at 10kts, so will be here in a few weeks. They can only just about get the forecast right for the next few days.

Weather forecasting now is getting better and more accurate all the time.

For those interested, try https://www.wunderground.com/hurricane for good solid predictions. Also shows signs of a couple more that may be spinning up over the next week.

That far out is well, ...

The MetOffice said:
The nature of our atmosphere means it is not possible to predict the weather on a particular day months to years ahead.

At best we'll get, "It's a 50% chance of being wet." 'twas ever thus!

I have friends who live in Treasure Cay Abaco,

They bought a beautiful Cattana 45 last year ..

They posted pictures on FB on Sunday morning of how they had secured it in canal on the island with 18 anchor points all around it.

None of their wide circle of friends has heard anything from them since,...the news coming out of Abaco is heartbreaking....I understand power, phones, internet are down, though some people still seem to have managed to post pictures to the internet

The severity of this storm, couple with the low lying nature of the island and the size of the surge, and the news of the devastation of the island, and lack of any message to friends, leaves me very worried for them

I had a frisky sail back to Jersey today in winds of 20 knots,,,,great sailing, well powered up and heeled. a storm for us is 40 knots - my wife and I were talking about and trying to imagine what 220 mph winds must be like

The rescue helicopters are now getting in, the hurricane stopped over Grand Bahama for two days

The Bahamas are so low lying, barely 20 m above sea level at the highest point, that surge has just obliterated so many of the houses

More than 20 dead confirmed, it is suggested that there are many more ...100s are currently reported missing

I have got word tonight that my friends in Treasure Cay Abaco are safe, but no word directly from them ..I have friends too in BVI, which as many will know was hard hit 2 years ago...but the population of BVI is tiny compared with the Bahamas, and BVi has steep hills which gave safe refuge

No doubt the media will lose interest quickly in the devastating aftermath of the hurricane, and will focus on the US impact when the depowered storm arrives there....the implications and consequences will live on for years for those directly caught up in it
