Hurricane Damage

We just heard today that our boat has a broken mast and boom, damaged radar and radar post, damaged to hull/deck joint and a hole in her side and all this before they have lifted her. Having seen a video of the inside of another boat which also fell, we now have a very bad feeling it may be the end of our boat. The surveyors who are in the yard in Grenada say it is the worst damage they have ever seen after any hurricane, the yard looks like a collection of firewood. Looks like a long time before we are cruising again.

If it's not that big an area this is all easily fixable. If it's a big patch needed, Bavaria will probably supply mouldings to suit - as long as you are dealing with a good repairer. Post UK hurricane we had a boat fall on a cradle, had to cut a big bit out, replace heads mouldings, stick it all back together - and I promise you would not find a trace of the damage on it now. And you get a shiny new mast and boom, possibly rigging too. Look on the bright side.

Hi Spicemariner,

That's awful news and I'm very sorry to hear it. As boatless says, it it staggering what repairs can be done to even seriously damaged boats these days, though its as often as not the incredible water damage rather than the 'obvious' structural damage that's the real problem to put right completely.

I hope there's much better and more encouraging news for you after they've lifted her and the surveyors have had a good look.

All the very best

Jerry

a possibility is that the insurers will write off the boat. you could then buy the wreck off them and do the repairs yourself. there's a good chance that you'll end up with a boat in servicable condition and some cash to spare! don't give up.

Hi Spicemariner,

Just wanted to say how very sorry I am to hear your news. Absoultely heartbreaking. The only thing I would say is that if salt water has got inside to the wiring, electrics, woodwork and motor then any repairs may still leave problems in the years to come but I guess you know that - I wish you all the best

I had been thinking of moving Bambola back to Grenada or Trini to sail in the winter - I wonder how the boats on the hard in Trinidad got on? Sounds as if Chagachcari got away with it... I wonder if the insurance companies are going to make even there no go for the hurricane season which would leave Venezuala - mind you that was a good place too,,,,

Good luck with it. There are always lots of good boats to buy around the WI and E coast USA so the fun of bringing one down the ICW and the island chain to Trinidad could be a plus..
regards and best wishes
Michael

Thank you for all your good wishes. We are expecting the worst, our friend's boat (which didn't actually fall but the supporting posts went through the hull) had almost every headlining, door jam, and moulding cracked and damaged. Our boat is no longer being produced by Bavaria, so doubt they could supply much but we wont know anything until she is lifted. Many people have water damage from burst water tanks. There are so many boats damaged probably over 400 in Grenada it could take years to get them fixed, we really hope if she is to be fixed that they will bring her to UK, it will just never get done in Trinidad.
