Hurley Lock this weekend

A quick call to the number posted on the pedestals reporting that the power has gone off will despatch "International Rescue" to reset the system for you and save you having to hand-wind

Summer assistants MUST have attended some courses (Working Near Water, Manual Handling etc.) before they are allowed to work unsupervised - This includes covering the lock during meal breaks.
As they are required to wear a lifejacket at all times, they must experience one self-inflating in a controlled environment, in order that they are aware of the sensations involved and how to swim with the jacket inflated.
This is carried out in a swimming pool with instructors present - Please do not try to offer to help the assistants with this exercise whilst at the lock!!!
Some assistants have started since the first batch of courses were run and are booked in for early next month. As soon as they have received this training they will be able to cover luchbreaks.

All that makes me wonder how the system survived before H&S became such an issue. Yes, of course very sensible, but I cynically wonder if all that training will put some SAs off in the first place (do they get paid while doing the training?).

More worrying is, given that SAs are only in place for two months (hitherto three and a half ??), that EA may decide in future that the expense is not justified, and therefore no more SAs?

Does all the training disbar boaters from assisting - catching lines from other boats entering behind one's own? It helps hard pressed lockies in busy times.

As for the power not being on, the instructions on the pedestals MUST be followed to the letter - Do not attempt to work the lock in any other order. The units will trip out if any button in pressed for more than TWO MINUTES. The power will then switch off and handwinding is the only option.

What was wrong with the downstream lock control model (Romney and below). The user has more control, but still within some idiot proofing. These newer systems have an "over idiot proofing" designs which collapses the system(sound like Microsoft).
If I continually press any button on the old system, it just ignores me, why doesn't the new work in a similar fashion.

Of course users should RTFM, but peeps don't, and it difficult in the dark.
The indicator lamps are confusing - does flashing mean "press me now", or "don't press, I'm doing something"?

I think it's a poor interface because it doesn't cater for the average user who isn't interested in the logic and just wants to get his boat through. That's 90% of users.

Shades - I'm obliged for the detailed explanation, makes me more comfortable if I have to call "Action support"

Charter says that assistants will be available from Caversham to Molesey during June as well.

I made the mistake of enquiring further upstream.

As you know "Tamesis divisum tres partes est" so my knowledge is restricted to my preferred cruising area
