Hunting's banned. Smoking's to be banned. A wee dram on board is threatened. Health & Safety & Political Correctness are quickly strangling all our freedoms and enjoyment. Is our sailing is becoming over regulated? Where is Labour's Social Engineering going to stop? Opinions please?

Yup .. bring back badger baiting, repeal drink driving laws, speed limits, lower the age of consent, repeal the clean air act and we'll all be a lot better off!

The smoking ban is the best thing that ever happened. This is from an Irish non smoker. The pubs are significantly cleaner, and much more enjoyable to have some grub in.

I am amased at the half backed attempt to introduce it in England. Go the whole hog.

This is one issue where the nanny state has been positive.

I can see the generality of your point...

... but what on earth has hunting got to do with PC?

I find this whining from the hunters and so called countryside alliance extremely taxing. I didn't notice them all threatening civil disobedience when ships, cars, coal, manufacturing, etc all went down the swanny.

Magic

I was a long term smoker and gave up two years ago DESPITE the constant government nagging advertising which had quite the opposite effect. As a result of stopping smoking, I have put on a lot of weight - now the ba**a*ds are at me again every time I turn on the TV, and the BBC seem to be a government propoganda machine these days, especially Breakfast TV. I don't need some interfering busybody to tell me I need to lose weight, once again it is counter productive and they are wasting my tax money doing it. If Drony B. Liar tells me not to eat burgers and drink gin as far as I'm concerned that is exactly why I will do it. Kids are overweight and not getting enough exercise - where did the school playing fields go? Who provides the burgers pizzas and fries in the school canteens?

The country has gone PC mad, Yobs rule the streets (blamed on alcahol yet we are going for 24hr opening), the Police cannot stop and search without filling in monumental forms and anyway don't care about crimes that are beneath their career climbing aspirations. HSE fears stops even the most ordinary activites, conkers are banned at school though rugby continues, strange that one. Parents and teachers alike dare not touch their charges for fear of a child abuse allegation. Etc etc etc............

All this is in addition to other more important matters like the lies around Iraq, destruction of the UN and so on and on.

But guess what? They will be re-elected again because some people still believe the spin and others who don't now believe it will only protest by not voting or voting Liberal Democrat - some protest that.

Rant over.

Let's not stop till they've banned fishing - apart from the torture aspect we need to get rid of lobster pots, drift nets and anchored anglers all of which are serious hazards to navigation.

Yobs rule the streets (blamed on alcahol yet we are going for 24hr opening),

The 24 hour opening was explained by a local labour MP on radio,

it allows us to regulate the closing time, so that they close at different times and spread the yobs over a larger time span.

Can anyone explain ???????????????????????

Doesn't happen often but when I heard the message on the Dutch radio regarding ban on the fox hunt, it put a smile on my face very early in the morning....... Not totally up to date with all the details but by what I've heard they found a clever trick to push it through, right?

Also as a smoker, I am very happy with all the regulations and hopefully a total ban in public... why? Because I ahve to give it up (been singing that song for the last couple of weeks) and hopefully it makes it easier.

Furthermore, in a very positive mood so I agree... let's ban the bans!!!

Rene.

Simply boycott churches and go sailing on Sunday instead.

You do already, so problem solved !

No more bans

Re: If you want peace of mind

Ban the news.

If you think you need to be well informed your deluding yourself. What can you do with the info? Nothing! Oh it informs your choice at elections and during other democratic processes does it? It appears to inform most people to the extent that they don't vote anymore. It can be no coincidence that the country with the best informed population, through sophisticated 24 hour rolling news, has the highest incidence of clinical depression. Yes that's us.

Democracy as she is practised in the UK is no democracy at all. The "who can shout the loudest minorities" rule the roost while politicians are dizzy and off balance from leaping from one band wagon to another while covering their arses.
Professional politicians decide what they think we want, band together to give it some thought and then try desperately hard to find a form of words that look like we got it while ensuring we didn't. They haven't worked out that most of us are so jaded that we didn't want it, never expected, thought they'd cock it up anyway or just rob us blind like usual.

Right I'm of to set up an enquiry into why the toast got burned this morning. Lets see I need a judge, 22 lawyers and 200 clerks, 2 rainforests worth of paper and a nice office block. I'll report back in three years, until then, if you have any burnt toast issues, just say you wouldn't want to comment until my findings come out.
Oh! And eat Cornflakes or something.

Yes, and that is why pubs in Ireland (the republic or Free State) are closing due to a drop in custom.

Quite agree - I don't agree with any 'nannying' legislation. Personally I hate smoking (reformed smoker me!) but it is dying out through commercial pressures anyway. The Pub / restaurant in my village has recently gone full non smoking and alot of others are following suit.
If we don't speak out about hunting etc. How can we expect people to speak out for us when sailing comes under the hammer.
I know this is all trivial compared to what happened 50 years ago but this is a very good poem which I think says it all really:

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

Re: If you want peace of mind

There is too much salt and sugar in cornflakes, though they may get a green label it should really be a red card...

Alex

Although I agree wholehearteldy with your general sentiment i do have one major caveat.

In my student days I dont recall seeing many in red coats and jodphurs marching againt apartheid or or in support of gay rights, the miners, printers, steel workers, etc etc. In fact, unless I am severely mistaken, I was of the opinion that the hunting set would rather have set the dogs on them and the whining commies like me who supported them.

Surely if a group wants the support of others to establish or maintain their rights shouldn't they first look inwards and ask what they have done for others in a similar position?

In my area (very pro hunt - but mainly populated by city lawyers / brokers rather than farmers!) the CA put up posters encouraging us to 'fight discrimination'. I laughed so hard I almost crashed the car.

When all said and done, part of me (a big part) is inclined to think 'quid pro quo hunters' and just maybe, what goes around really does come around.
