Hi all
Deciding between a Hunter ranger 265 with an updated engine or a Hunter horizon 30, worth extra marina fees and outlay? Single handed and short family passages will be most common use. Appreciate your help.

Welcome.

Not sure how anybody can help you with that sort of decision. Just weigh up the pros and cons of each size and make your decision as to which suits you and your budget

What are the sail handling systems of the two actual boats you have in mind ?

If singlehanded a self tacking jib might well be a boon, as long as there's a larger cruising chute for light winds.

If the Horizon 30 has an old original engine that would be reason itself - financially not as a sailor - to go for the Ranger.

I know you're talking about marinas, but the acid test is which would make your heart sing as you rowed away from her ?

Before we bought our Hunter Channel 31 we looked at Ranger 265s and Horizon 30s, the big sister to our previous Horizon 27. The Horizon 30 had a more conventional layout to the Ranger (open plan?) IIRC, and I always thought the Horizon 30'was a prettier boat from a rowing away point of view, both had the same designer though, David Thomas. Both easy for short handed sailing.

Both will sail well. The Horizon 30 was a development of the Hunter Impala racing yacht and as such is likely to be a little twitchier, whereas the Ranger 265 was designed as a cruiser from the outset. Also not all Horizon 30s have the self-tacking jib or the CCS (cockpit control system) rig which may be significant for the OP's intended single-handing.
