Hi folks,

How suitable is the Hunter ‘twin fin’ for a drying berth please? Are the deeper keels and therefore more splaying an issue?

Thanks in anticipation.

It would be worth asking the owners association, assuming there is one.

Any boat should be able to stand the loads of splayed keels going up and down in soft mud, though the loads can be significant - even Centaurs need the bilges at the keelbolts reinforcing, a well known modification.

The main snag I can think of with the Hunter is might the grp interior prevent access to do what is otherwise a simple mod' ?

Many thanks for your thoughts folks. I had asked the association but am awaiting a reply. Hopefully an owner will stop by soon with the answer.

We kept a Horizon 26 bilge keel for 10 happy years on a half tide mud berth at Emsworth.

We had no problems with the keels, or anything else really. It was a lovely boat.

There will be no problems with keel splaying with a Horizon 23 or any other British Hunter. I had a Horizon 23 for a good few years and cruised her all round the Irish Sea, drying out everywhere including hard, soft, stony & uneven surfaces. Only problem I ever had was drying out on sand in a strongly tidal area. The pull of the receding tide on the boat caused high tension in the mooring line which pulled the bows down and caused the lower front corners of the keels to dig in. The fast-ebbing tide then scoured the sand out round the front of the keels making the boat dry out with a bows-down attitude. It only happened a couple of times, both at Ravenglass, not something I would worry about.

Join the Hunter Association if you haven't already: £15 well spent.
