i have been using Y10 which is great to remove yellow staining however, my hull now seems to now be getting yellow much quicker. Is this because this stain remover has been reducing the hulls resistance to the elements? And, is this a bad sign, will i need to re-do my hull and seal it properly the end of season? Is this causing my hull to become "porus like" ? Is this bad for the gel coating? Im a little pid p**** off with this product, as im sure this is what has caused the problem?

It could be the y10, I used it a few times and I also thought that the hull yellowed quicker.

But someone recently commented the same about their hull and they had not used y10, their theory is that the water in the harbour is less polluted with sewage and that this is having some effect.

Certainly last year my AF was less effective than previous years and also rotten eggs smell from heads was more noticable.

I will use y10 again this year but I will put on several coats of wax.

I am also going to bring the AF up a little and double up on the coats near the waterline.

I did the same job but with a solution of water and oxalic acid crystals about 3 months ago.

Looked great at first but despite several layers of polish it is allready going yellow again.

I am tempted to paint the hull next time or may just accept it the way it is. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I had a similar result with Y10. Don't know if it was because I took too long to clean it off. Cure has to be a wax or sealer of some kind, not found a product that works well so far.

I used turtle wax's gelcoat sealer last year after cleaning the hull and a mild polish with G10 to bring back the surface gloss. It just wipe it on leave it to dry and buff off - I put 2/3 coats along the water line and it stopped a lot of the staining and cut down the weeds that normally grow above the boot top - I get a lot a waves where I am and the boot top would have to be half way up the hull to stop all the weed growth. This year I tried the KLASSE all in one as prep ( non abrasive) and the High Gloss sealant glaze to finish with. I have to say the hull and top sides looks and feel like new (17 years old).

I look forward to see how this stands up to the test of time but so far I'm impressed as some one had left rubber rub marks down the hull already. Great I thought! but I just rubbed them lightly with a finger and they disappeared!

I don't think Y10 encourages yellowing. It's a mild solution of oxalic acid in gel form. However, using it will remove any protective wax etc so the hull should be waxed or protected somehow afterwards.

A product that was developed specifically to cure yellowed hulls (for a manufacturer who had a problem with a few huls afaik) was developed by Wessex chemicals (nope, no relationship or interest innem meself) i think they call it gelcoat restorer. Not cheap but it does make the boat colour the same whiteness as it was when new. The grp is left "open" though, and needs wax afterwards.

Any strong cleaner will leave the gel coat open to more rapid yellowing by taking off any protective coating. After anything like this, you need either a good wax or a synthetic Glaze system.
