Hull to deck joint leak.

Just removed some lining to discover a nasty leak between the flange of the hull and deck ..

Short of taking the boat apart.
Some time in the past the rails have been replaced ,covering the old bolt holes but not sealing them.
The real water ingress is between the flange.image.jpg
The original bedding compound seems quite hard.

Some out of old bolt holes,but quite a lot appearing on top of the flange and bedding compound.
The deck is teak laid on top of the fibreglass,suspect caulking there too.
Just looks like a big problem to even try and fix,boat is 1985 vintage ,real pity they didn't glass over the flange joint.

Sorry to hear of your problem, glassing over would have only really have hidden the problem. you need to keep the water out altogether.
 
Hmmm did suggest a new teak deck ,that would stop some of it .Just seems a poor construction method,but obviously common in the States where the boat was built.
 
Thats normal for British construction in the 1980's.
If theres no core material along the edge of the deck as there shouldn't be, and the bolt heads are getatable.
Then I'd remove a few bolts at a time, prepare and glass underneath, re-drill and replace bolts with butyl tape, move along to the next section.

Assuming the rail is an aluminium extrusion, The real solution is to remove the rail above and glass in or epoxy fill the redundant holes before rebedding the rail.

Alternatively get it all dry and fill holes from below, reseal each bolt one a a time and then test.

I had loads of leaking toerail bolts and the water goes everywhere. I suspect the water is running under the rail, down the old bolt holes and then out of the inner part of the hull deck join. I would guess the outer edge of the hull deck join is still ok.

I don't understand the picture.Is the leak at that dark stain?If so just drill at the middle of it deep enough to go through the hull laminate but not the deck's and inject a good sealant in.Then clean the underside and cover with a small patch of glass and epoxy.
