Hull stripping

My newly aquired Jaguar 22 has been painted (not professionall if you get my drift)a few times I could see the outline of a previous name for the boat under the paint so decided to wet sand it back to remove the lettering. As I went deeper and got back to the original (Gelcoat?) finish a beautiful blue bootline appeared and got me excited enough to want to take it back to the original finish at least above the waterline. I have looked up previous topics and could not get a straight forward answer at my knowledge level so-- What is epoxy vs gelcoat do I use a paint stripper and then wet sand and seal and wax or am I mad and should just sand and put more paint on?

No real answer I feel. Possibly painted because of the general condition unless the colour was terrible. Any one spot can look ok when sanded but what would it look like overall. Possibly best to wet and dry and paint again. Quicker and easier ....

international do a paint stripper that will remove paint but not damage the gel. however boat owners dont generally go tio the trouble of painting a perfectly gel coated boat. in all probability, you simply havent yet found the repaired area which was why he painted in the first place.

I would think that someone would probably paint over gelcoat to cover fading, scratches and general lumps and bumps. You might be better off rubbing her back to a stable surface then getting her resprayed with something like awlgrip. Not sure about using paint stripper - I would try it on a few trial areas first.

One other forumite that we see out on a reagular basis has an awlgrip sprayed boat, and it looks unbelievably good.... so if you do end up respraying, give awlgrip serious consideration

Some manufacturers now offer it as a standard finish instead of Gelcoat.

Like the Awlgrip comments. My boat is in the boat yard shed for painting with awlgirp. Seen some of the painters other work so will be afraid to take boat out in case of damaging the paint when reberthing !!
