It depends where you are. The consensus, and my own experience, is that the copper based epoxy coatings like Copperbot, Coppercoat, work well if applied correctly.

In Holland copper is seen as ecologically unacceptable and no copper based antifouling can be applied (but it's OK to stock it, sell it or have it on the boat - very Dutch logic!)

If there were enough of them, I guess they would be as cheap, after all they use no water or detergents, just power. I think it's a good idea, but they need to be redesigned to account for all hull types, deep keel etc.
