If you mean the 2 handled job sort from Halfords they are just buffers really. To "cut" the gelcoat back you need a low speed "grinder" type.

I'm very happy with it, so far I've cut and polished a 'chalky' 40ft blue hull and three large removal lorries!

Orbital is not a polisher. A polisher is rotary, something you can give a bit of grunt to and will not stop rotating.
I have a Dodo Juice, speeds from 1000 to 3000 rpm. I had a problem with the speed control unit and the backup was very good, even after the guarantee had expired.
It's the right tool for the job and along with 3M polishing pads and compounds I have a fabulous finish, that has lasted.
