Hi - my 30 yr old sabre 27 (new owner) - has 'brown stains' around the water line - whats a simple & cheap way to clean this off & restore the white hull? What do you folks use? Not looking for a show room finish.

Thanks

Mike

I used what was called Ajax liquid cleaner which was for baths etc.. It is now called Jiff, or Ciff, or something very similar, and can be found on any supermarket shelf. Some people have said in the past it scratches the surface but if it does not scratch a new bath I cannot see it harming a 20 od year old gell coat. It did not mark my boat and 3 years on there is no difference between that part I cleaned and the part I didn't.

Oxalic acid removes most stains without any rubbing. Just spray it on and rinse off. Available from
http://www.rydenor.co.uk
Used to be sold as Starbright Instant Hull Cleaner.
It does discolour antifouling so you have to do all the waterline if you dont want to see different antifouling colour.
A search for Oxalic acid on these forums should provide you with more advice.

I assume you are cleaning the hull out of the water?

I have just done this to a 27 yr old Moody 30. for above the water line I tried all sorts but ended up cleaning with ciff followed up by car tcut polish worked very well. NO mechanical polisher. Have a look here:

The new paint is the antifoul but above the water line is the original gel coat, not bad I am sure you would agree. She has been back in the water now for some
2 1/2 months and she still looks excellent above the water line. I did make a very basic mistake, in that I did all that work before touching the topside so I had to keep hoseing down as I cleaned the deck, as I would have had streaks all down my new polished boat..... so if you are starting to clean your boat and the deck etc. DO the topsides first.

have fun.

I found that a chilli bin filled with yr favourite tipple helps the elbow grease.

Try a powder called Wipe Out,available in most chandlers.Add water and sponge on to the whole hull and wash off after 15 minutes.Fantastic results.I used it for first time some years ago to remove rust staining on stem and afterwards noticed either side had come up white compared with the normal yellow of the hull.Since then my hull has been white !
