Pete - I used Halcyon to bring my new boat across Biscay and down to the Algarve, the Skipper and I were constantly looking at GRIB and Predict Wind to ensure that conditions were safe. We were lucky to have no time constraints which really takes the pressure away regarding urgency, we were also extremely lucky to have flat seas across Biscay in late November.
We did have a F7 following wind and sea coming south down the Portuguese coast but having an experienced Halcyon Skipper in charge made a potentially worrisome 24 hours feel like a walk in the park.
These days the forecasting is so accurate, Predict Wind is especially good and has integration with my B&G plotters - meaning I can route based on weather conditions.
I know that you have your own views on boat delivery but the experience I gained by using Halcyon and crewing for their Skipper has been priceless, (and far cheaper than road haulage).
I’d recommend them without reservation.
That's interesting, I haven't heard of "Predict Wind". Incidentally, my views on boat delivery are pretty relaxed. I'd certainly use delivery skipper(s) if I wanted to reposition my boat from say the Balearics back to our berth on the mainland. And as you say, an awful lot can be learned from their approach and no doubt their calmness in a 'situation'.
If Halcyon will excuse a bit of thread drift, I really enjoyed watching "Dangerous Flights" recently on Quest. It's about Ferry Pilots delivering single engine planes (sometimes across the Atlantic in Winter) from one side of he world to another. That seems to be even scarier than delivering boats!
