i have a volvo 2003 on my boat now going in to my second season and still keep forgeting how to work the cold start is it pull stop lever and put revs up twice
oe put throttle on full then push stop lever in and out twice

1. Put throttle lever to almost full throttle.
2. Pull out engine stop, then push it back in.
3. Operate starter.
4. When engine starts, adjust throttle.

In really cold weather or with a weak battery, use the decompression lever at the front of the engine as well. This is a 2 man job. Lift lever upright, use cold start, turn engine over untill at full starter speed then drop in the decompression lever and it should start immediately

Does anyone know how to adjust the cold start setting please?
On my 2002 you have to tug the stop knob really hard to the end of its travel otherwise it has no effect. It's not just a stiff cable, pulling the knob just to stop the engine is easy. Neither the owner's handbook nor the workshop manual gives any setting instructions.
Thanks
Mike

On my volvo 2003 circa 1984 the decompression lever had three settings looking from the front of the engine to the rear,
Lever to the right 3 o-clock...normal running position
Lever vertical 12 o-clock....fully decompressed on all cylinders.
Lever to the left 10 o-clock....2 cylinders decompressed 1 cylinder normal running,
For emergency starting i.e. low batteries/ hand starting put lever to vertical or 12 o-clock, spin engine on starter or by hand or both as fast as possible, flick lever to the left. the engine should start on one cylinder, when this happens then flick the decompression lever smartly to the right 3 o-clock and the other two cylinders should fire up, hope this helps
it worked for me a couple of times

Ether based starter fluids are not recommended for diesels. The problem is that the stuff tends to fire before the piston reaches TDC which is not good for the piston or the con rod.
Nigel Calder recommends that is you must use it, do not spray directly into the air intake, but spray it on to a rag that is held over the intake.

I agree, ether will ignite before diesel oil. You only need a very small amound or onto a cloth; and be careful that the engine does not to suck the cloth into the intake.
