How to test Alternator output?

I know they were not as good, but oh for the days of dynamo,s. put em in a vice short the terminals together,wrap a piece of rope round the pulley,pull, if it nearly broke your arm (as it started to generate) you knew it was ok!!

I'd like to fit an ammeter and actually have a -60A/0A/+60A one sitting about at home. It has no shunt, any suggestions as to how I might fit it/size a shunt?

Quick way to check your alternator,
turn on all the power you can for say 15 min,
start engine,
do the cabin light go bright,
if yes it's probably working,
if they they stay the same or get slightly brighter get the alternator bench tested.
