Hi,

Can somebody please take me through the process of taking apart a Gibb winch please.

I've shown photos as below.

How does the circlip at the top come off? I'm assuming that it is that has to be removed to allow the winch body to come away?

Thanks.

I have a different model, but on mine, there is no circlip. If you look down the hole on the top, you will see a screw that needs to be undone.

I put a series of downloadable pics on bluemoment a few years ago. circlip model. The circlip has a notch at the end to allow you to prise it out with a small screwdriver. It's quite likely that the plastic shims/bearing surfaces will have worn or disintigrated.

That's how I remember my old Gibbs, although it's going back a while.
A good tip, conkc01, is to release the circlip with the winch handle in place. They're special marine circlips and and like nothing better than to dive in the oggin ;) The handle deters such dashes for freedom.

That's what I have, a screw down the hole but I unscrewed it and couldn't lift the body off so assumed this related to something else?

That is because it has not been removed probably for decades. Do as JumbleDuck suggests - it needs effort to get the drum off.
