Hello All and happy new year from now :)

I have a question that I am sure you all can help me. The sailboat I have bought this April has a Volvo Penta Md2020 engine but some of its parts are veeeery rusty..

So I would like to get your ideas what are the correct steps to remove the rust properly and repaint the engine. I will aslo appreciate fi you can suggest some products if you have used before.

I am attaching a photo from the most rusty part of my engine.

Thanks to all for the answers!

I'm in the same boat .... pardon the pun ... and have the same engine although mine is badged Perkins and is blue. About the best I have done is scrub with a wire brush and liberally apply rust converter. I can't really see how to do a better job without removing the engine ... although when I remove components ...ie starter motor/ heat sink etc. I clean off and repaint with heatproof paint. I think you can still get Volvo Green ..although I'm not sure I'd bother

Without a full strip down, properly cleaning off the rust will be close to impossible. That said surface rust on cast iron rarely gets more than skin deep, the bigger problem being rusted fasteners that you later want to undo. Certainly your photo depicts several fasteners that will likely be very difficult already.

For a non-strip of the engine option to at least reduce the extent and improve aesthetics then a thorough clean with an engine degreaser / detergent (Gunk or Jizer) and a steam cleaner if you have one, or jet wash to provide a thorough rinse off, remove any loose accessible paint, then paint over the rusty areas with a rust convertor such as Jenolite. Once that has cured a coat of the makers shade of engine enamel. But this is only window dressing.

I know it isn't answering the question, but I'd concentrate my efforts on getting some oil on those fasteners - being able to undo those will be critical one day, the block being pretty won't. Being liberal with the oil will stop the rust on the block too.
