How to race your cruiser?

Has YM really run out of ideas? I especially enjoyed the tip 'Avoid Collisions! They slow you down as well as causing damage'. As well as completely ruining your day I'll bet! I reckon those that want to race already do and those that don't can't afford to (just look at the very expensive sail-cloth on the cover) or get fulfillment through pottering from pub to restaurant as it should be.

It's not a bad suggestion at all, there are quite a few good points in the article as well as the obviously naff ones you mention. I intend to enter the annual Beneteau regatta this year, have heard that it drags all the wannabe racers out. The main point I agree with is that it improves your boat handling and tuning skills enormously and the other is that the socials tend to be good as well.

Not that bad

I started racing about 2 years ago on my own boat but I wouldnt have been confident if I hadnt crewed on someone elses first.

I thought the article helped explain some of the mythology and processes in racing for those who have never raced.

My theory is you should take all races very seriously.......for at least an hour then get out a beer and follow them all around!!!! By the end you'll be as happy as the winner and all the other losers have about 15 beers to catch up.



P.S. The Surgeon General warns that sailing in any way other than strictly sober could be dangerous....

I applaud the attempt to 'demystify' racing. As often with YM I wish they had gone into more detail but the basic instructions they give 'don't hit anything' are valid and maybe just what the novice needs.

I thought the article was a great step in the right direction! Why can't a whole series of articles be run concentrating on increasing boat speed.

This will surely be of interest to club racers and cruisers alike.
