Thanks for all the helpful ideas - what a great tool this forum is! I think the cordless drill option is worth a try & I'll let you all know if it works! The mobility motor would be a neat solution too if I was confident about my wiring skills.
Yes I think a cordless drill will work. The most feeble I found ( a Screwfix cheapie) can develop a torque of 10Nm.
You say the keel winding mechanism requires 200 turns to fully raise the keel.
With that pitch of screw thread 10 Nm should translate into a lifting force of about 12500 N . More than a match for 3750 N weight of keel.
