How to get rubber exhaust hose off?

Hi all,

I am trying to fit an exhaust temp alarm, I managed to get one of the hoses off from the exhaust elbow, but the other engine is proving to be a lot more challenging! Engines are TAMD71, so I guess hose is approx 6 inches diameter. I have tried using screwdrivers as levers, rotating the hose etc. I think the main problem is that the rubber is sticking to the metal on the elbow. Is there a method for getting these off? I thought about using washing up liquid as a lube? Any suggestions would be welcome!

If you get a couple of screwdrivers in far enough then lubricate, wd 40 or such will do, leave it to soak right around the joint, then remove the elbow from the engine, you will then be able to twist the elbow, once it moves a little you are on your way, can be hard work though.

Advise you not to use WD 40 as it will attack the rubber of the hose and it will become dozed. Washing up liquid will do just as well with some mild heat from a hot air gun or boiling water. Why not run the engine to get it hot then try again?

I didn't recomend WD 40 but said it would do, I doubt a one off small dose will harm exaust hose, it is made to with stand a very hostile envoirement,i,e diesel oil saltwater and heat.

How many large exaust hoses have you removed from the elbows using your method?

You do not say how long this hose is, if it's a short bit between steel pipes then I would unbolt the elbow and as stated, and try to twist it out. If they were fitted properly then there will be some adhesive on them, when we replaced ours all 9feet of it we had to cut them off with a pad saw. Lovely job.

Hi Guys, Thanks for all the advice, I will give it another go. The exhaust hose is one piece from the engine to the transom, so really can only work on it in situ..

unbolt the elbow, then you and a couple of strong mates wrestle it off, ours was delaminated so we just cut it off.
