Can you use a sw world receiver such as a Degen DE1103 to receive gribb files via a PC????
If you have this set up your input would be greatly appreciated

This doesn't answer your question, but a good alternative with a simple shortwave/pc setup it to get weatherfax.

Grib files are extracts from a world wide weather data model. There is an excellent explanation of this and other weather topics by Frank Singleton at http://weather.mailasail.com/Franks-Weather/Grib-Files-Explained.

Mailasail provide a service whereby Grib files can be 'ordered' by e-mail, using a satellite connection or SSB, if you are ocean-going. However, the easiest way if it is available is to use an internet connection.

However you obtain the Grib file, you need a program with which to view the data. We have found the French authored Zygrib program to be excellent: it is free and handles the downloading of the Grib file for you. The only tricky part is getting the downloaded program file unpacked and installed on your computer, for which you may need another program 7zip to extract the program.

Excellent explanation with which I concur - Unless ocean transiting using SSB for GRIB is time-consuming and error-fraught. I used Pactor and finally, after many abortive trials of other software, zygrib.
I now use this solely, but use a cellular data connection on either a Windows OS or Linux OS. I've found Nokia phones by far the most sensitive for downloading off the internet, better by far than Apple or Samsung smartphones or the exiguous Huawei dongles (sic) forced on one by various mobile providers.
You only have to be concerned about unzipping the Zygrib download, if you're condemned to suffer a Microsoft OS, I use Winzip, however on RAR files I'd suggest www.philipp-winterberg.com/software/rarzilla_free_unrar.ph or http://www.mk-net-work.com/us/uz/unzip.htm is another shareware.
