I'm really fed up with myself for not being more thorough but having rearmed my lifejacket yesterday, and carefully repacked it, the mechanism fired during the night. Which means that I have to get yet another CO2 cartridge. My dip in the Crouch is costing me around £40. Most of the powder was still in the insert bobbin but it was clear that it had, over a period of more than 12 hours, taken up enough moisture to make it fire.

My guess is that the moisture was in the spring end of the mechanism and having washed it out again this morning I am a bit perplexed as to how I can be sure it is now dry. I can't get the spring end apart so moisture could still be in the centre spring cavity.

Anyone had the same problem and found a solution?

A new 'spring end' is only £6.99 from Marine Warehouse compared to ~£15+ for the rearming kit.

(I have used them, and found them very knowledgeable and helpful, but no other connection).
